French President Macron dresses as Muhammad to show support for Muslim community
PARIS, FRANCE – French President, Emmanuel Macron, has made a public appearance dressed as the Islamic Prophet Muhammad in order to show support for the Muslim community.
The controversial move comes after a number of terrorist attacks in France involving a knife attack at a chruch in Nice, and the beheading of a school teacher for showing cartoons of the prophet to his class.
Yesterday the seemingly defiant President declared that France would not give any ground “over our values, for our taste for freedom, for the ability on our soil to have freedom of belief”.
However, after a number of Islamic countries condemned the President, with Turkey calling on the French leadership to avoid further inflammatory rhetoric against Muslims, today the President appeared more conciliatory approach.
“This outfit is my way showing that I honour and respect the traditions of Islam, and in no way intended to cause offence by my comments.”
“Islam is known as the ‘religion of peace’, and so I say to my muslim brothers ‘As-salamu alaykum’ (Peace be upon you).”
Imams, however, were quick to respond to the stunt, releasing a joint statement from the French Council of the Muslim Faith (CSCM):
“Umm, is this guy actually nuts? Seriously, we aren’t touching this one with a ten-foot pole!”
It is further reported that Macron is intending to attend Friday prayers at the largest mosque in France, the Grande Mosquée de Paris, still in the Muhammad costume. The French Army has been put on standby.
